The Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishath on Thursday demanded the State government to bring in a law to ban all fireworks displays using gunpowder to ensure the safety of the public. It said that possibilities of using alternative methods to create a visual spectacle using modern science and technology can be explored. Referring to the series of explosions at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Mundathikode near Thrissur on Tuesday, in which 15 people lost their lives, the Parishath said that such accidents do not occur due to the lack of laws and safety standards. The main reason for the increase in such accidents is the non-compliance with the laws and compromises made under pressure.
