Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is piloting a project to generate electricity from abandoned oil and gas wells through geothermal energy. The pilot project is coming up at an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (OMGC) site in Ankleshwar near Surat, Gujarat. Funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to the tune of ₹15.5 crore, the project aims to produce up to 450 kW of continuous power over a period of two years. The initiative is led by Rajesh Nair, Faculty Coordinator, IIT Madras Green Hydrogen and Hydrocarbons Tech Consortium, Department of Ocean Engineering.
