Karnataka State Pollution Control Board’s office in Mangaluru has recommended the Board’s head office in Bengaluru to collect ₹1.09 crores from Excel Pre-University College, Guruvayanakere, Dakshina Kannada as ‘environmental compensation’ for polluting the nearby huge water body called Guruvayanakere, according to an environmental officer of the Board.

The official told the Karnataka Development Programme Review Committee meeting presided over by Dinesh Gundu Rao, Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada on Saturday that when the lake’s water quality was tested, the Board found its standard deteriorating from B to D category. When checked, the Board found that it was due to the college letting out its untreated sewage to the water body.
