The Water Resources Department (WRD) has restored a key irrigation tank at Saduperi village that forms part of Vellore Corporation on Chennai – Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) to draw water for the civic body during summer. Spread over 250 hectares, the tank, on an average, can store 205 mcft (million cubic feet) of water. Borewells were laid around the bund of the tank by local bodies to meet the water needs of its residents. More than 15,000 residents in at least eight surrounding villages depend on the tank for domestic consumption. “The tank also helps to recharge farm wells in surrounding villages where paddy is largely cultivated. The restoration of the waterbody will help store excess rainwater during monsoon,” said G. Sethu, a farmer.
