A wild elephant was found dead at Payyanikkotta near Peruvannamuzhi in Kozhikode district on Wednesday (April 15). The animal had reportedly got impaled by an iron rod during an operation by Forest personnel to drive away a herd that had strayed into human habitation. The incident reportedly took place around 2 a.m. in the upland area, where residents had alerted Forest officials about the presence of a herd of wild elephants. Officials who reached the spot attempted to drive the herd back into the forest by bursting crackers.
