The shortage of vehicles for Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) volunteers to transport waste has led to piling up of biodegradable waste in various parts of the city. Presently, only a few of HKS groups involved in waste collection across wards have vehicles, while the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation’s plans to purchase vehicles is getting delayed.

According to Left Democratic Front (LDF) Parliamentary party leader S.P.Deepak, the previous LDF-led administration had cleared a proposal to purchase waste collection vehicles for the HKS group, but the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP)-led administration which took charge some months ago failed to take it forward. “One can see sacks of waste piled up along roadsides in many wards. The issue is also caused by a failure to manage the system as per the available staff strength. The shortage of vehicles has compounded the problem,” says Mr.Deepak.
