The Erode district Collector S. Kandasamy, has announced an extension of the deadline for registering children’s names in birth certificates, describing birth registration as a child’s first right and the certificate as a key legal document establishing citizenship. According to a release, under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, and its 2023 amendment, births must be registered within 21 days to obtain a free certificate. The document becomes complete only when the child’s name is entered and is essential for school admission and for obtaining identity documents such as voter ID, driving licence, passport and visa.
