Isolated spells of heavy rain that lashed many parts of the State took the residents by surprise as it brought some respite from the sweltering summer heat on Tuesday. The rain, after a long spell of oppressive heat and humidity, brought much-needed relief to people, especially in cities like Thiruvananthapuram, where the majority of the weather stations recorded rainfall.

The rainfall was induced by convection clouds caused by the north-south trough prevailing above mean sea level. Parts of the State are likely to receive isolated rain in the coming days as a trough/ wind discontinuity runs from the upper air cyclonic circulation over North Chhattisgarh to the Comorin area across Telangana, interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu at 0.9 km above mean sea level. Under the influence of the system, isolated summer showers will continue for the next four days, according to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
