Rhythm of resilience: How’s BRC band is striking a new note

In Alayamon, inclusion isn’t just a policy — it’s a melody. While BUDS Rehabilitation Centres (BRCs) are known as safe spaces for adults living with intellectual disabilities — offering essential day care and vocational training — the centre at Alayamon in Kollam, has struck a different chord. Its atmosphere no longer just carries the sounds of therapy and routine, it resonates with the triumphant beat of drums and the clear call of trumpets. The BRC has formed a vibrant band troupe that is redefining inclusion by performing at public events. With every drumbeat and trumpet blast, these young performers are proving that while their challenges are real, their potential is limitless.

For the 33 students at this rural centre, all above the age of 18 and navigating the complexities of different disabilities, the BRC has always been a place of safety. But through a creative livelihood project supported by a ₹2 lakh grant from Kudumbashree, it has also become a platform. Under the guidance of a professional trainer, 20 students have honed their skills, transforming from novices into a disciplined musical unit that has already clinched prizes at both district and State-level competitions.
