MLA for Belthangady Harish Poonja said on Tuesday that a case of the government acquiring a private property for highway widening by paying ₹44 lakh as compensation and subsequently not using that land for the project has come to light in Dakshina Kannada.

He told the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting that such a case has emerged from the jurisdiction of the Kuvettu Gram Panchayat.

The MLA said that the National Highways division under the Public Works Department (PWD) acquired the property in question for widening NH 73 between B.C. Road and Charmadi.
