SHAIKMOHIDEEN Awareness rallies and mobile electronic voting machine (EVM) demonstration vehicles were flagged off by Collectors of Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts to mark National Voters’ Day on Sunday. Tirunelveli Collector R. Sukumar flagged off the rally from the Corporation’s trade centre. The rally, along with the mobile EVM demonstration vehicle, went through the four car streets of Nellaiappar temple and returned to the trade centre through town arch. The procession included artistic performances such as karakattam and silambattam and more than 1,000 school and college students carried awareness placards. Speaking at the event Mr. Sukumar said that as per the orders of the Election Commission, National Voters’ Day awareness programme was conducted with great enthusiasm in Tirunelveli. Similar programmes were being conducted across all the constituencies of the district. Not a single eligible voter should be left out in the voters list and their names must be registered. Kanniyakumari Collector R. Alagumeena flagged off the vehicles for the six Assembly constituencies of the district. Addressing the media, she said awareness programmes on EVM machines had been launched in order to create awareness among the public of the process of voting in EVMs, checking the acknowledgement slip to see whom they had voted for and to make people to aware of the basic features of EVMs and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). In Thoothukudi, Collector K. Elambahavath flagged off the vehicles demonstrating the EVM process. At the event, he said the vehicles would travel across the district until the dates of the Assembly election was announced. Similarly, Tenkasi Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore flagged off five mobile vehicles from the Collectorate for each constituency in the district.
