Mild tremors were felt in Sivakasi, Rajapalayam and Srivilliputtur, triggering panic among people, on Thursday night. Initially, when the buildings shook, which lasted for a couple of seconds, the residents thought it was due to an explosion in a fireworks unit. Collector N. O. Sukhaputra confirmed that a mild tremor measuring 3 in Richter scale was felt at 9.06 p.m. “We have not received any information about damages in the district so far.” While he had called for an emergency meeting, the Collector said there was no need to panic. People said the tremors were felt in areas adjoining Virudhunagar district and in Tenkasi district.
