The forest personnel on Friday (January 30, 2026) retrieved the carcass of a male leopard from an agriculture well in Chennamma Gudipalle village, on the outskirts of the Chittoor Municipal Corporation limits, and later cremated it.

According to the District Forest Officer (Chittoor) G. Subburaj, the leopard had strayed into an agricultural field and fell into a farm well by accident. As the incident took place at night, it went unnoticed. The leopard, which struggled for several hours, died due to exhaustion.

Over the last couple of years, the population of leopards has reportedly increased in Irala, Gangadhara Nellore, Yadamarri, Bangarupalem, and Palamaner forests under the Koundinya Wildlife Sanctuary, according to sources.
