Sporadic incidents of violence and assaults on candidates marred polling in parts of West Bengal on Thursday (April 23, 2026) as the first phase of the Assembly elections progressed across 152 constituencies, prompting the Election Commission of India (ECI) to seek reports from trouble-hit pockets.

The State recorded a brisk voter turnout of over 62.18% till 1 p.m. on Thursday (April 23, 2026), reflecting a strong early participation.
