The Kerala High Court has directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to inspect the temporary bridges constructed across the Bharathapuzha for the ongoing Mahamagha Mahotsavam at Tirunavaya, which is expected to draw over 10 lakh pilgrims.

A Bench comprising Justice C. Jayachandran issued the direction while considering a petition filed by M. K. Vinayakumar, general convener of the event’s organising committee. The petitioner had challenged a stop memo issued by the Tirunavaya village officer under the Kerala Protection of Riverbanks and Regulation of Removal of Sand Act, 2001 pursuant to which the construction of the temporary bridges was halted.

While submitting that the State was not opposed to the conduct of the event, the government pleader expressed concerns over whether the temporary bridges would be capable of accommodating such a large number of pilgrims. He also sought directions to ensure adherence to the green protocol.

The petitioner submitted that all necessary arrangements had been made, including the availability of medical personnel round the clock.

The court further directed the executive engineer concerned of the PWD to inspect on Wednesday the premises where the event is taking placeand to suggest measures to strengthen the temporary bridges. Additionally, the executive engineer and the Superintendent of Police were directed to submit their recommendations by Wednesday on the steps required to ensure public safety. The Malappuram District Collector was instructed to ensure that the concerned government departments take all necessary measures in this regard.

The matter is scheduled to be heard on January 27.
