Development works on the Kalingarayan Channel, including the construction of a protection wall and a baby channel, have begun and are expected to be completed by June. The 91.10-km-long canal, built in 1283 by Kongu chieftain Kalingarayan, irrigates 15,743 acres across Erode, Modakkurichi and Kodumudi taluks, supporting thousands of farmers. Originating at Kalingarayanpalayam in Bhavani and extending up to Kodumudi, the channel has long been regarded as an engineering marvel and supplies water for nearly 10 months a year, enabling cultivation of crops such as turmeric, banana and sugarcane.
