A recent circular issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education directing all affiliated schools to introduce a third language in Class 6 from the current academic year to comply with the emphasis given in the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE-2023) for teaching two Indian languages has put the Puducherry Education Department in a quandary over finding the faculty and teaching material for implementing the board’s directive. Since the circular issued by Professor and Director (Academics) CBSE, Praggya M. Singh on April 9, had given a seven days’ time for the heads of affiliated institutions to comply with the directions of the board to finalise and notify the chosen third language, the Education Department has communicated to CBSE the practical difficulty in implementing the directive as per the time schedule mentioned in the circular because of the existence of the Model Code of Conduct and the absence of an elected government.
