Fireworks manufacturers association says at least 400 of the 1,200-odd licensed fireworks units in Virudhunagar district are leased or sub-leased. The unabated practice of “leasing out” and “sub-leasing out” fireworks units by licensees is the major reason for most of the fatal accidents claiming multiple lives, complains The Indian Fireworks Manufacturers’ Association (TIFMA). Association general secretary T. Kannan told The Hindu that at least 400 of the 1,200-odd licensed fireworks units in Virudhunagar district were leased or sub-leased. “However, officials have been claiming that they are unable to detect such units,” he complained.
