The world-famous Alanganallur jallikattu began on a high, with bulls and bull-tamers vying for the top spot in a gallery packed with foreign tourists and visitors, on Saturday (January 17, 2026).

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin attended the jallikattu in Alanganallur.

Mr. Stalin presented gold rings to bull tamers at the jallikattu.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said “Tamil Nadu government would accord priority to best bull tamers in getting jobs in the Animal Husbandry Department.”

Mr. Stalin added that “A special training centre and hospital for veterinary services would be established in Alanganallur at ₹2 crore by the government soon.”

After a while, the Chief Minister left Alanganallur to Paramakudi by road in Ramanathapuram district to inaugurate the manimandapam built in memory of Tyagi Immanuel Sekaran.

Earlier, the Registration and Commercial Taxes Minister P. Moorthy flagged off the event in the presence of Madurai District Collector K.J. Praveen Kumar.

This year, the winner would walk home with a brand new car – to be given in the Chief Minister’s name – while the runner-up would receive a two-wheeler. The third prize is an e-bike. The owner of the best-performing bull would be presented with a tractor, the organisers said.

Before the start of the event, the organisers, along with the participants, took a pledge to adhere to the rules and not violate the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court. Members of the Animal Welfare Board of India are present at the venue.

Animal Husbandry Department officials issued tokens to the bull-tamers after examining them. Likewise, the bulls, too, were subjected to examination, they added.
