Thiruthuraipoondi, a reserved constituency for Scheduled Caste in Tiruvarur district, is a Left stronghold where the Communist Party of India has won 12 of 14 Assembly elections since 1967. Yet, persistent livelihood anxieties and deepening ecological stress are being felt by the electors in the constitutency. Encompassing the internationally recognised Muthupettai lagoon and mangrove forests, as well as the Udayamarthandapuram Bird Sanctuary, the constituency presents a paradox: a region of ecological richness whose residents grow increasingly precarious.
