In a boost for India’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) ambitions and alleviating some pressure amid the West Asia crisis, the Petroleum Ministry on Wednesday (April 22, 2026) expanded the definition of what constitutes aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to include blending of the fuel with synthesised hydrocarbons, that is, fuel created from non-petroleum sources.

The gazette notification reads: “The following sub-clause shall be substituted, namely: ‘aviation turbine fuel’ is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons conforming to IS 1571 specification or its blend with synthesised hydrocarbons as specified in IS 17081.”
