Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday announced that a cancer, trauma centre and superspeciality hospital will be established in Haveri district.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the building of Haveri Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) and various development works and initiating new works at a function organised on HIMS premises.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said that there are now 71 medical colleges in the State of which 22 are government colleges.

In a phased manner, medical colleges, trauma centres and superspeciality hospitals will be established in various districts, including Vijayapura.

It is being done to ensure that healthcare facilities are made available to the commoners, he said.

The Chief Minister said that the State government believes in inclusive growth and the guarantee schemes are benefiting the people irrespective of their caste or religion.

Despite criticism of the guarantee schemes, the State government has not stopped them and so far, spent ₹12,000 crore for them. Belying the charge of the State going bankrupt, the government is standing strong despite spending such an amount on the guarantee schemes, he said.

He said that in Haveri district, various development works have been initiated and completed and the District Hospital has been upgraded to a 500-bed facility. Of the ₹500 crore spent for HIMS infrastructure, the Centre has released ₹194 crore, while the State has released ₹300 crore, he said.

Committee

Mr. Siddaramaiah said that he is willing to constitute a committee headed by BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai to expedite the implementatin of the Mahadayi project and the third phase of Upper Krishna Project.

He said that unless the third phase work is completed the State will not be able to utilise its share of 173 tmcft of water.

He also requested Mr. Bommai to take active interest in facilitating the implementation of the projects.

Earlier, Mr. Bommai requested the Chief Minister to sanction a superspeciality hospital for Haveri. He also thanked Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for initiating the Varada-Bedti river linking project and requested him to take the requisite measures to draw water from Bedti stream to reach the Varada river.

“Only 8% to 10% of the water is drawn from Bedti to Varada which will help the people of Gadag and Haveri districts. The project should be implemented by taking everyone, including environmentalists and activists, into confidence,” he said.

Mr. Shivakumar spoke on the various initiatives of the State government.
