The ornate and canopied Speaker’s chair with special carving for the U.P. assembly, embedded with U.P.’s State emblem, has been hand-carved in Karnataka. The chair was dispatched to Lucknow from Bengaluru on Friday. The seven-foot-tall chair has been carved out of rosewood by 10 artisans under the supervision of Karnataka State Forest Industries Corporation here. The cost of the chair is ₹ 29.79 lakh, including GST. It is learnt that the U.P. Legislative Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, who was in Bengaluru to attend the All-India Speakers’ Conference, organised by Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, in September, 2025, was impressed with the Speaker’s Chair in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He spoke to Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader to source a similar chair for the U.P. Assembly, after which it was tasked to the corporation. A team from the corporation, including DCF Sridhar, also visited the U.P. Vidhan Sabha in Lucknow to hold discussions and secure dimensions. A Forest Department source said they did not want the crown on the Speaker’s chair that is present in Karnatala Legislative Assembly. The artisans took nearly two months to finish the chair, and the U.P. Vidhan Sabha is expecting the chair to reach Lucknow by February 5, ahead of the Budget, according to sources.
