To raise public awareness on road safety, the Karnataka Transport Department, in coordination with various departments, will organise a large-scale ‘5K Safe-A-Thon’ in Bengaluru on February 1, Minister for Transport Ramalinga Reddy announced on Wednesday. Addressing a press conference here, the Minister said the event would be held with the theme “Our Roads-Our Safety”, with the primary objective of protecting public lives. “The Safe-A-Thon is aimed at creating greater awareness among citizens on responsible road behaviour and the need to follow traffic norms strictly. Road safety is not the responsibility of the government alone, it is a shared duty of every road user. I request people from all walks of life to actively participate in the campaign and take a pledge to practise safe road behaviour,” Mr Reddy said. The 5K Safe-A-Thon will be held on February 1 from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. at Sri Kanteerava Stadium. Participants can take part by walking, cycling or running. Registration is free, and members of the public, including youth, can register through www.saferoadskarnataka.com, according to the transport department officials.
