Tomatoes were sold for ₹50 per kg at wholesale markets in Erode, Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday. | Photo Credit: GOVARTHAN M. A fall in production due to intense heat and lack of rain has pushed up the wholesale price of tomatoes to ₹50 per kg at the Nethaji Daily Vegetable and Fruit Market at V.O.C. Park Ground here on Tuesday (April 28, 2026). Tomatoes from Thalavadi, Dharmapuri, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh arrive in 15-kg boxes at the wholesale market, from where they are distributed to retailers. A wholesale trader said that a box of fine-quality tomatoes is auctioned between ₹650 and ₹750. Due to the intense heat, crops have withered and arrivals have dropped significantly, the trader added.
