The preliminary findings of the post-mortem of the female hippopotamus, Hamsini, at Tyavarekoppa Tiger and Lion Safari in Shivamogga suggest that the animal suffered a severe liver infection that had spread to multiple organs.

In a communique to the media, V.M. Amarakshara, executive director of the Safari, said that the animal had suffered a severe liver infection resulting in a systemic infection involving multiple organs. The animal also had a localised vaginal and cervical infection that did not affect the uterus.
