Addressing a press conference, the Police Commissioner said that the campaign will begin on Sunday, with police personnel themselves setting an example by compulsorily wearing helmets while on duty. After a 15-day awareness campaign, the police will enforce mandatory helmet usage for all two-wheeler riders in the city. He said that helmet enforcement is being prioritised in view of the alarming accident statistics. “Nearly 60% to 70% of road accident fatalities reported in Kalaburagi city last year have been attributed to riders not wearing helmets,” he said. Emphasising that safety must take precedence over penalties, the Police Commissioner said that the objective of the drive is not to collect fine but to save lives and inculcate responsible road behaviour among citizens. He appealed to the public to cooperate with the police and start using helmets as a basic safety measure. He said that consistent usage can significantly reduce the severity of injuries and prevent avoidable deaths.
