An Election Control Room has been established under the jurisdiction of the Assistant Commissioner of Labour (Enforcement), Madurai, to monitor compliance with mandatory paid leave for workers on polling day (April 23). In view of the 2026 Assembly Elections to be held in the States of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal on April 23, 2026, and the second phase in West Bengal on April 29, 2026, and as per Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, a full-day paid public holiday must be granted to ensure 100% voting. This applies to workers, temporary employees, daily wage earners, and contract laborers belonging to the States of Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, who are employed in the establishments – shops and commercial establishments; catering/eateries, transport corporation/companies, Information Technology (IT), BOP firms, and other private organisations and businesses – within Madurai district.
