Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who heads the JD(U) and became a Rajya Sabha MP last week, tendered his resignation on Tuesday (April 14, 2026), after the Cabinet meeting.

The BJP, which is the single largest party in the 243-strong Assembly, with 89 MLAs, will thereafter elect its legislature party leader. For the first time, the BJP is going to have a Chief Minister in the State. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the new government on April 15 at Lok Bhawan.
