Minister for Water Resources and Katpadi MLA Duraimurugan will inaugurate the first full-fledged 300-bed District Government Headquarters Hospital in Gudiyatham town in Vellore on Monday (January 26, 2026). This comes on the heels of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami announcing a protest on Tuesday (January 27, 2026) against the facility’s opening being delayed.

Officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), which executed the multi-crore project, said the new five-storey government hospital had facilities such as ECG, CT scan, and operation theatres. The facility also has round-the-clock power supply, with diesel generators as back-up. “The facility will benefit residents in the 80 villages near Gudiyatham. Until now, they had to travel to the Vellore Medical College Hospital, which is around 40 km away, for advanced treatment. Accident victims will also get timely treatment at this new facility,” said K. Pavan, a resident.

At present, Gudiyatham has a decades-old government taluk hospital with around 190 beds. The dilapidated facility, which was built in the 1950s, has around 120 staff, including 30 doctors and nurses. On an average, it gets 1,500 out-patients daily. Most cases are referred to the Government Medical College Hospital near Vellore Town.

Spread over 5 acres of government land, the new district government hospital has been built at a cost of ₹40 crore. The facility will have separate sections for cardiology, neurology, paediatrics, nephrology, and obstetrics and gynaecology. Separate wards for emergency and accident-related cases, cancer treatment, and sedation and x-ray rooms will also be part of the facility. Five rooms have been allotted to treat out-patients alone.

Civic amenities

The new hospital has two elevators for patients, staff, and doctors. Each floor has a drinking water facility and separate washrooms. The premises has a rainwater harvesting system, and solar panels to power the lights. Separate parking areas for cars and two-wheelers have been constructed. Closed-circuit television cameras have been installed throughout the premises. Bus services to the new hospital will be increased to provide easy access for visitors, officials said.
