The unit established at Madurai District Armed Reserve complex is aimed at enhancing criminal identification and investigation through the systematic collection, storage and analysis of biometric and physical measurements, as authorised under the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022, which replaced parts of the Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920. This authorises police to collect biometric data, including fingerprints, palm impressions, foot impressions, photographs, iris scans and behavioural data like signatures from arrested persons, suspects, or convicts. It would enable efficient, uniform and high-quality collection of biometric data along with phograph. This comprehensive biometric repository is expected to significantly improve the identification of repeat offenders and help establish linkages between multiple crime scenes, thereby strengthening investigations and prosecutions. Mr. Bidari inspected the facility along with Deputy Inspector General of Police (Madurai range)Abhinav Kumar and Superintendent of Police B. K. Arvind.
