Murali Kumar Sandalwood actor Mayur Patel was booked for drunken driving and negligent driving after allegedly causing a late-night multiple-vehicle accident on HAL Airport Road in Bengaluru. The accident occurred around 10 p.m. on January 28 when Patel, who was at the wheel, allegedly rammed into a car that had halted at the traffic signal, near the Command Hospital, from behind. The impact triggered further collision involving four vehicles. According to the police, two other cars were damaged in the accident. Patel was allegedly speeding at the time of the accident. Passers-by alerted the police control room, following which Halasuru Traffic Police rushed to the spot and took Patel to the police station. Police made him undergo a test, the result was found to be positive, confirming that he was under the influence of alcohol. Police seized Patel’s car. On checking, they learnt that the vehicle did not have a valid insurance at the time of the accident. Based on a complaint by Srinivas, a car owner, the police registered an FIR against Patel at the Halasuru Traffic Police Station under Section 281 (rash and negligent driving) of the BNS, and Section 185 (drunken driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Srinivas, the complainant, claimed to have bought the car a few days ago after pawning the jewels of his wife, and was working as a cab driver. He had not even paid the first EMI, and rued the potential loss of several days of employment due to the necessary repair work.
