Jipmer’s ambitious programme to establish a Trauma-cum-Rehabilitation and Multi-Organ Transplantation Centre at Sedarapet village near here at a cost of around ₹1,000 crore is back on track following fresh initiatives by the institute and the territorial administration. In 2019, the territorial administration had handed over around 50 acres of land at Sedarapet to Jipmer for establishing the facility. However, in 2023 the government decided to cancel the allotment of land and took possession of the site. An indication towards revival of the project was given by Jipmer Director Vir Singh Negi while speaking at the convocation ceremony on Saturday. A senior official in the Union Territory’s administration, when contacted, said the project was back on track after certain interventions. “We have received a fresh proposal from Jipmer to establish the trauma and multi-organ centre. The land is at present under the possession of the Industries Department. We are taking steps to transfer the land once again back to Jipmer. The process will be completed shortly,” the official said. According to a Jipmer official, the project will turn out to be a major advantage for Puducherry as the facility is being planned to cater to the whole of South India. The organ transplant centre will cost around ₹590 crore while the trauma care unit will come up at a cost of ₹425 crore. The project will provide employment to around 2,000 people, he said. “With the government planning to position Puducherry as a health tourism hub, the establishment of the Centre will be an added advantage,” the official added. Other infrastructure projects Jipmer was expanding its healthcare initiatives in the Union Territory by taking up construction of 476-bed hospital in Karaikal, 200-bed Regional Cancer Centre and 150-bed Critical Care Hospital Block on its campus here. “Jipmer has ambitious plans to further expand its services, research and outreach initiatives. We plan to introduce new courses and training programmes, fully operationalise the satellite campus, train and upskill our staff, students, and faculty,“ said Mr. Negi.
