Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming described the thumping win over Mumbai Indians as a statement directed inward — more to the team itself than to outsiders — following its disappointing defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“We were more disappointed with the Sunrisers game… so the Mumbai victory was really encouraging. That was our statement to ourselves, not to anyone else,” Fleming said on Saturday, on the eve of the IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans. “We had a great opportunity, but failing to chase it down hurt. The real challenge was to bounce back, and the team responded well.”

He also backed skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, praising both his batting and leadership growth. “Rutu has nothing but support. He’s a quality player and a young captain growing into the role. He’s doing a good job. There may be outside noise, but within the group, he’s highly respected and fully backed,” Fleming added.
