The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Council meeting on Friday approved the procurement of new stainless steel foldable cages and dog kennels for stray animal facilities in north and south Chennai. The infrastructure will be installed at the civic body’s dog pounds located in Ariyalur (Zone 2) and Madippakkam in Perungadi (Zone 14) to improve the housing conditions for street dogs during their recovery period following sterilisation surgeries at Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres. The total expenditure for the upgrade is estimated at ₹3.14 crore — that includes ₹1.42 crore for the Ariyalur facility (Ward 17), and ₹1.72 crore for the facility on Tambaram Main Road in Madippakkam (Ward 184). The new equipment will replace or supplement existing cages with medical-grade stainless steel units, the resolution mentioned.
