Open dumping and burning of waste continue in several rural areas of the district, raising concerns about environmental degradation and public health. Over 60% of the waste generated is plastic, much of which is burnt in the open.

The district comprises one corporation, four municipalities, 42 town panchayats and 225 village panchayats across 10 taluks. As per the 2011 Census, it has a population of 22.51 lakh and around 6.58 lakh households.
