An earth mover driver was killed after a portion of a hillock collapsed near Varkala. The incident occurred at Cherunniyoor in Varkala around 12 p.m. The deceased has been identified as Aneesh, 38, of Nedumankavu in Kollam. According to the police, a large mass of soil slid down from the top of the hillock and fell onto the earth mover while excavation was in progress. The accident partially crushed the vehicle and trapped the operator inside. Local residents and people from nearby areas rushed to the spot and commenced rescue efforts. Soon, two units of the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services from Varkala arrived and managed to extricate Aneesh from the debris. He was immediately taken to the Varkala taluk hospitals, but the doctors declared him dead on arrival.
