The previous YSRCP government has obtained permission for only 100 MBBS seats in each of the 17 colleges and not 150 as is being claimed, says Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday approved important proposals put forth by the Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare to facilitate admissions for MBBS students in the Government Medical College at Piduguralla from the academic year 2026-27. According to a press release from the department, some of the proposals that received the nod included recruitment of 237 doctors and other health staff for the medical college and 600 staffers for the teaching hospital. For the completion of the college, the Chief Minister approved proposals related to infrastructure and recruitment of staff for 100 MBBS admissions. As per the National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations, for every medical college with 100 seats, a teaching hospital with a bed strength of 420 was required. The Chief Minister granted the approval for this as well. The Union government had extended a financial assistance of ₹195 crore for the functioning of the college under the Centrally-Sponsored Scheme, while the State government would construct and manage the college. Stating that the former Chief Minister, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, and his party leaders had misled the people of the State by claiming that construction had begun at 17 government medical colleges, each offering 150 MBBS seats, Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav clarified that the previous government had obtained permission for only 100 seats, and not 150, as was being said.
