The project was originally scheduled to be completed by October, 2026. The revised deadline was announced during a Citizens’ Stakeholders’ Outreach Programme organised by the Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited (K-RIDE) on Wednesday. The meeting brought together resident welfare associations, non-governmental organisations and civil society representatives to discuss the progress and challenges of the sub-urban rail project. A stakeholder who attended the meeting said that K-RIDE shared a revised corridor-wise implementation schedule during the interaction. According to sources, the updated timelines were finalised at a recent PRAGATI (Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation) review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “It was surprising to see that deadlines have been extended. It is disappointing that such an important public transport initiative has been delayed for so long,” a participant told The Hindu. Mr. Modi had originally promised in June 2022 that the project, which had been pending for 40 years, would be completed in 40 months. New deadlines As per the project timelines presented by the K-RIDE, the presentation which has been accessed by The Hindu, corridor-2 will be the first to be completed. This corridor includes the Chikkabanavara-Yeshwantpur stretch (7.4 km) and the Yeshwantpur-Bennigenahalli section (17.5 km), with commissioning scheduled for December 2028. The corridor-4, which comprises the Bennigenahalli-Rajanukunte (24.6 km) and Heelalige-Bennigenahalli (22.5 km) sections, is expected to be completed by June 2029. The longest timelines are for corridor-1 and corridor-3. The corridor-1 covers the Bengaluru City-Yelahanka stretch (17.7 km) and the Yelahanka-Devanahalli section, including the airport extension (29.5 km). The corridor-3 includes the Kengeri-Bangalore Cantonment stretch (16.9 km). Both corridors are now slated for completion by March 2030. The BSRP was sanctioned in October 2020 after decades of deliberation and was envisioned as a high-capacity commuter rail system carrying nearly 20 lakh passengers daily. The project proposes modern nine-coach, air-conditioned trains operating at high frequencies of five to 12 minutes across four corridors spanning 148 km and serving 58 stations. The corridor-1, connecting Majestic with Kempegowda International Airport, had earlier been accorded priority and was initially scheduled for completion by October 2023, before the deadline was pushed to October 2026. Outreach programme Meanwhile, the K-RIDE officials said the outreach programme was intended to reaffirm its commitment to transparent and participative infrastructure development. Speaking to The Hindu, Rajkumar Dugar, convenor of the Citizens for Citizens, said the engagement was encouraging. “It is good that citizens are being involved and that the meeting was transparent. Such an initiative is happening after nearly three years. We are positive that the project is on track, but substantial funds should be allocated to overcome land acquisition and financing challenges,” he said. The officials made detailed presentations on project status, timelines and upcoming milestones, followed by an open interaction. The K-RIDE officials said feedback and suggestions from stakeholders would be considered during project execution.
