Anthropic has asked a California federal court to rule ‌in its favour in a copyright lawsuit brought by music publishers Universal ​Music Group, Concord and ABKCO, arguing it made “fair use” of their ⁠song lyrics to train its AI-powered chatbot Claude.

Anthropic’s Monday filing addresses the key question for a wave of high-stakes copyright cases brought by creators against tech companies whether it is legally permissible to copy ‌millions of copyrighted works without permission to train AI models?
