On April 15, 2026 residents of areas governed by Tambaram City Municipal Corporation woke up to discover that water now cost dear. From ₹50.50 per month, drinking water charge had been spiked to a whopping ₹150.50. Residents had to fork out three times the amount they had been accustomed to paying. From ₹606 per year, water charge now stood at a forbidding ₹1,806.

Residents were on the warpath, and with a couple of major residents’ associations putting their entire weight behind the campaign, by sundown, the hike was scaled back and the revised charge stood at ₹101 per month with effect from April 15
