Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday (April 16, 2026) asked the Union government to operationalise the women’s reservation law only after completing the caste census, accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of reducing “nari” (women) to a mere “nara” (slogan).

Participating in the debate in the Lok Sabha on three Bills seeking to amend the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam and set up a delimitation commission, the Samajwadi Party chief alleged that the government was using the proposed changes to delay the Census while pushing for an early delimitation.
