Out of nearly ₹10 crore seized from the public during surprise checks as part of enforcement of Model Code of Conduct for Assembly polls by flying squads in Tiruppur district, ₹1.4 crore has been returned to them upon submission of requisite documents, it is learnt. The money has been returned as per the ECI procedure. The remaining amount has been entrusted with the Income Tax Department, District Collector Manish Narnaware informed. After the poll code of the Election Commission of India took effect on March 15, flying squads carried out checks and effected seizure of cash exceeding ₹50,000. The money beyond the limit required documentation in the forms of bank withdrawal receipts or invoices, according to officials. Amounts that were seized in excess of ₹10 lakh in single operation have been referred to the Income Tax Department.
