In fulfilment of long-felt need of travelling public, Southern Railway has proposed to the Railway Board operating new train services from Mettupalayam to Southern districts in Tamil Nadu, and distant destinations in Kerala and Karnataka after completion of infrastructure works by July.

The Southern Railway has, citing the importance of Mettupalayam Station as important owing to its location on the foothills of the Nilgiris, a sought-after tourism destination for visitors from across the country, proposed new connectivity to Rameswaram, Mangalore, Madurai, and Kannur, with stoppage at Podanur Station.

The Southern Railway has also factored in the pace of urbanisation of the stretch from Coimbatore City to Mettupalayam for introduction of the new train services.
