The holy flag being hoisted at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai on Sunday. The annual Chithirai festival began with the hoisting of the holy flag at Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here on Sunday. Priests performed special pujas and deeparadhan for the deities. Musical instruments were played at the temple bedecked with colourful lights. The lights and colourful paintings at the temple transformed the temple into the festival mode. The procession of deities on Chithirai streets took place in the evening. The coronation (Pattabhishekam) of Goddess Meenakshi Amman will take place on April 26. The Digvijayam event will take place on April 27. The highlight of the festival, celestial wedding (Thirukkalyanam) will take place on April 28. The Car festival will take place on April 29 and Lord Kallazhagar’s entry into the Vaigai river will take place on May 1.
