The Supreme Court had in January set a June 30, 2026 deadline for Bengaluru civic polls.

The Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) has written to the Karnataka State Election Commission seeking an extension of the deadline for conducting Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections till September 30, citing a severe strain on available staff owing to the ongoing national Census and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

This comes even as the Supreme Court had in January set a June 30, 2026 deadline for Bengaluru civic polls. The polls have been due since September 2020. There has been much cynicism over whether polls will be held on time within the apex court set deadline, and the government has now again sought an extension of three months.
