Farmers under the banner of the Desiya Thennidiya Nadigal Innaippu Vivasayigal Sangam staged a protest on Saturday demanding the release of water for irrigation in the North Bank canal originating from the Cauvery at Mayanur in Karur district. The Cauvery splits into two canals — North and South bank— at Mayanur. While the South Bank canal currently receives adequate water for irrigation, farmers alleged that water has not been released into the North Bank canal. Condemning the disparity, the farmers, led by the association’s State president P. Ayyakannu, laid siege to the office of the Assistant Executive Engineer of the Water Resources Department in Musiri on Saturday morning.
