Felling of trees on Kumbakonam Railway Station premises has drawn sharp criticism from the public and forums such as ExNoRa International, Thanjavur.

While ExNoRa flagged the issue with DMK Rajya Sabha MP S. Kalyanasundaram, a local resident posted a video taken at dusk of birds flocking to the peepul tree near the Vinayagar temple on the railway station premises on social media. In that video, he expressed his inability to help the birds save their roost.

Meanwhile, regular train commuters and those residing in the vicinity of the railway station have reportedly embarked on petition campaign to save at least the centuries-old peepul tree. A requisition letter has been drafted by a group of teachers working at various schools in Kumbakonam and circulated on social media for forwarding to the Southern Railway officials at Tiruchi.

The draft letter has sought development with due consideration to ensuring and preserving naturally available ecological balances.
