Members of the public in the Ganapathy area of Coimbatore city can now access free public Wi-Fi services provided by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). The facility has been implemented using funds from the Coimbatore Member of Parliament’s Local Area Development Scheme. The service was launched on Friday by Coimbatore MP Ganapathi P. Rajkumar at the District Collectorate, in the presence of District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, Coimbatore Corporation Mayor K. Ranganayaki, Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran, and Principal General Manager, BSNL- Coimbatore, V. Shankar. Speaking at the event, Mr. Rajkumar said this was the first instance in Tamil Nadu where free public Wi-Fi services had been implemented using MP funds. He said the initiative was intended to benefit working people and students. He added that similar facilities were planned at the Coimbatore Railway Station, Anaikatti and Koduvaai. The officials said that users would be required to log in using a one-time password (OTP) sent to their mobile phones. The Wi-Fi network is available under the name “Coimbatore Ganapathy WiFi”, and each user can access the service for up to four hours per day. According to the officials, four access points have been installed at an annual cost of around ₹5 lakh. About 500 users can access the service at a time, with internet speed of up to 50 Mbps. The facility can be expanded based on demand, and bandwidth can be increased if the number of users rises, they added.
