In a bid to sensitise school children about marine conservation, the Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI), a non-governmental organisation, conducted the Chennai Ocean Workshop in the city on Thursday.

Hosted along with the Greater Chennai Corporation and HCL Foundation at the recently renovated Victoria Public Hall, the workshop saw 200 school children participating from 20 schools across the city. The five-hour session was aimed at creating awareness about the conservation of marine life and habitat.

Arun Krishnamurthy, EFI’s founder, said the workshop focused on gamification models to introduce aspects of threats to marine life, pollution, and the need for conservation and community awareness among students. Interactive activities were used to engage students on threats that marine species face.

The workshop also encouraged schools to set up ocean clubs to help students understand human activities and their impact on ocean and marine habitat. Two more workshops in Kovalam and Marina beach would be organised, targeting to reach 1,000 students by March, he said.
